A Chance in the World Introduction In his book A Chance in the World Steve Pemberton tells us about growing up in the Massachusetts foster care system. Steve was removed from his mother s care as a toddler and went from the life of an abused and neglected foster child with no self identity, to a successful, professional man with a family of his own. Steve breaks his story into three parts. In part one, An Orphan Boy, Steve has a distant memory of riding in a car next to another child. He was then in the care of the Andrade family for eighteen months and recalls being left on the porch for many hours while the family went out without him. Steve is then placed with the Robinson family at age 5, after one other failed placement that he has no memory of. The Robinson s lived in New Bedford, MA and Steve remained in their home until the age of sixteen. Over the course of eleven years Steve was severely abused and neglected by all members of the Robinson family. Steve was able to leave the Robinson s home with the help of his social worker. In part two, A Mysterious Past, Steve is placed with a teacher from the Upward Bound program, Mr. Sykes. In his care, Steve is able to graduate from high school and is accepted into his dream school, Boston College. He then begins to look into his past and becomes engrossed in the cultural history of New Bedford and learns of his biological family.
